A Newark man who investigators say fled the country after a deadly 2022 hit-and-run in Elizabeth has been captured overseas and returned to the United States, Union County officials said.
Trevon Smith, age 27, was arrested on Dec. 1, in the Dominican Republic for his connection to the crash on Oct. 8, 2022, that left Adi Taipe-Castillo dead, Elizabeth, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, Elizabeth Police Chief Giacomo Sacca and Elizabeth Police Director Earl Graves said.

A pedestrian was left in critical condition after being struck by two vehicles in Dutchess County, one of which fled the scene, police said.
The crash happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, near Georgie O’s at 787 Violet Ave. (Route 9G) in Hyde Park, according to the Town of Hyde Park Police Department.
The pedestrian was first hit by a driver who stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

A 49-year-old Rochester man was killed in a crash on Route 295 in Burlington County on Monday, Dec. 8, authorities said.
At 8:50 p.m., troopers responded to Route 295 south in Westampton after a Chevrolet Express van lost directional control, ran off the roadway to the left, re-entered the roadway, struck the curb to the right and overturned, Christopher Postorino, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police said.
