Darien's Lacrosse Team Stops McMahon Darien's Lacrosse Team Stops McMahon Darien's Lacrosse Team Stops McMahon
Darien's Lacrosse Team Stops McMahon Darien's lacrosse team is a perennial state power, one of the top programs in the nation and well on its way to another terrific season. "They are what we want to be,'' Brien McMahon coach Mike Epstein said after Thursday's 12-0 loss to the Blue Wave. "They are really good." McMahon (1-3) has a young team with a strong class of underclassmen that should be able to compete against the top teams in a few years. The Senators did not have an answer for the Blue Wave Wednesday. "We can't simulate the pressure that they put on you,'' Epstein said. "The only way you can feel that is by playing ag…

Speer Strikes Out 15 in Win Over McMahon "When he takes the ball in his hands, everybody in Westport expects him to win the game,'' Staples baseball coach Jack McFarland of pitcher David Speer said after Wednesday's 10-1 win over Brien McMahon. "He's under a lot of pressure." Speer made it look easy against the Senators. He fired a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts, and fanned 10 of the last 12 batters he faced. He did not allow a hit after the seventh inning. McMahon did not have a baserunner after the third inning. "David was fired up,'' McFarland said. "It was his first league game and he wanted to pitch well. That's a good team t…

Give Rowing a Whirl at Nrra Open House The rowers who cruise up and down the Norwalk River make it look easy, with their long graceful strokes and unison effort. If you've ever thought about joining them, the Norwalk River Rowing Association's open house Saturday might be a good time to get your feet wet. (Figuratively!) If you haven't done it before, that's the whole point. Masters rowers from the NRRA will teach rowing basics, one step at a time. "We try to break it down into bite size pieces,'' says Melanie Jacobi, the organization's outreach director and recreational team coach, and a Masters rower. "By the end, the whole boa…

McMahon Stopped by Staples' Speer McMahon Stopped by Staples' Speer McMahon Stopped by Staples' Speer
McMahon Stopped by Staples' Speer Brien McMahon's baseball team has run into some outstanding pitchers in its three-game losing streak. Wednesday, the Senators saw perhaps the league's best in Staples' senior David Speer. Speer struck out 15 and pitched a two-hitter to lead the Wreckers (4-0) to a 10-1 victory over McMahon (2-3). The Senators (0-3 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) were coming off a loss Monday to Trinity Catholic that ended on a walk-off grand slam. "The hangover is because you're facing one of the best pitchers in the league,'' Brien McMahon coach John Cross said. "He pitched a g…

McGehean Going the Distance for Charity McGehean Going the Distance for Charity McGehean Going the Distance for Charity
McGehean Going the Distance for Charity In all likelihood, Hally McGehean will be the slowest among the area runners participating in the Boston Marathon. "I'm very slow,'' she says. "I don't have much interest in doing it quickly." Her objective, however, is the most noble. McGehean, 38, is running to raise money for Families First, a Boston organization that teaches parenting skills to parents and children in difficult environments. McGehean's mother, Pamela Thompson, works as a special education teacher at High Road School in Norwalk. Boston will be Hally's fourth marathon, and each has benefitted a charity. She began running…
