Greenwich Swims Past Darien Greenwich Swims Past Darien Greenwich Swims Past Darien
Greenwich Swims Past Darien Darien ended the Greenwich girls swim team's reign atop the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference in 2009. It was the first time in 35 years a team other than the Cardinals won the league title. Friday, the Cardinals recaptured their spot as the league's elite team with a 106-80 over the Blue Wave at the Darien YMCA. Greenwich captured all three relay races and won seven of nine individual events to stay undefeated. Lauren Church won the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and swam the opening leg on the winning 200 medley relay team for the Cardinals. Other individual winners inclu…
Runners Meet Challenge at Cranbury Runners Meet Challenge at Cranbury Runners Meet Challenge at Cranbury
Runners Meet Challenge at Cranbury Tim Milenkevich has won 11 races this year at various distances. Sunday's victory in the Cranbury Park Challenge was one of the hardest, even though the Norwalk race was one of the shortest. Milenkevich, 28, covered the 5-kilometer trail run in 20:47. His time was about four minutes slower than his usual time for the 3.1 mile distance as he navigated his way through difficult terrain. There were tree limbs, rocks, roots and a stream that forced runners to tread carefully. "It's rugged for sure,'' said the Shelton resident. "But I liked it. It's an adventure." Paul Greenberg of Westport fi…
Young Runner Strides to Forefront Young Runner Strides to Forefront Young Runner Strides to Forefront
Young Runner Strides to Forefront In a little more than a year of competitive running, 13-year-old Alex Ostberg, who competes for the Wilton Running Club, has burst on to the scene as one of most precocious young talents to come out of Lower Fairfield County. Alex, an eighth-grader at Middlesex Middle School in Darien, started running competitively in the summer of 2009. His father, Peter, was training for the Hartford Marathon and Alex asked to join. While Peter ran the marathon last October, Alex blazed through the 13.1-mile half marathon in 1:22:23. That's an average speed of 6:13 per mile. He finished 34th in a field of …
Vasileff Builds a Plan After the Pain Vasileff Builds a Plan After the Pain Vasileff Builds a Plan After the Pain
Vasileff Builds a Plan After the Pain Lili Vasileff enters people's lives when they are at their lowest emotional stages. She enjoys it. The contradiction is part of the charm as a certified divorce financial planner, and Vasileff is one of the industry pioneers. "This is the time people are the most vulnerable,'' says Vasileff, who serves clients throughout Connecticut and the New York metro area from her Greenwich-based office. "You have to be educated and experienced, so that everyone stays on the same page to move forward with confidence post divorce. I can't begin to tell how many people stand at the court house, and say, '…

Former Pro Finds Calling Coaching Kids With his experience, John Woodring could coach football at any level. The former NFL player with the Jets chooses to coach boys in Norwalk for a simple reason. "It's fun,'' says John, whose once-beaten Panthers of the Norwalk Youth Football League tackle Bridgeport at 2 p.m. Sunday at Brien McMahon. "It's football at its purest form. They are doing it because they love it. That's always been very appealing to me." Woodring has coached in Norwalk for five years. Before that, he coached his son Erik in Greenwich. His wife, Cindy, is a Greenwich schoolteacher, and the town previously allowed ch…
Jones Still Flies in the 'Tri' Jones Still Flies in the 'Tri' Jones Still Flies in the 'Tri'
Jones Still Flies in the 'Tri' Eben Jones' return to triathlon competitions was just like riding a bike. Actually, it was riding a bike. Swimming and running, too. The difference for the one-time professional triathlete is that he's now 50. He might not be as fast as he was in his 30s, yet he still moves better than a lot of athletes half his age. The New Canaan athlete finished second last Saturday in the ITPMan Triathlon in Darien. The race was his first since 2002, when he won the Mighty Montauk Triathlon for the ninth time in 10 tries. His wife, Julie, purchased Eben a bike for his birthday in August. "I knew he would…
