At 4 a.m., officers responded to Route 21 south at Exit 8 after a man was struck by a vehicle, Nutley police said. The man stopped on the side of the highway and was crossing the road to assist a motorist with a flat tire when he was hit by a car, police said. The man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police said. The striking vehicle remained on scene, police said.
