At 4 a.m., officers responded to Route 21 south at Exit 8 after a man was struck by a vehicle, Nutley police said. The man stopped on the side of the highway and was crossing the road to assist a motorist with a flat tire when he was hit by a car, police said. The man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police said. The striking vehicle remained on scene, police said.

The fire occurred at 51 Green Grove Ave.,  the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said. "Due to a structure fire, residents are asked to avoid the area of Green Grove Avenue and Maple Place until further notice to allow emergency responders to safely do their job," the Borough of Keyport said. The fire remains under investigation, authorities said.
