A Long Island woman working as a state prison employee admitted to stealing $80,000 by pretending to be on active military duty, federal authorities said Thursday, April 9.
Leah Mathieu, a 34-year-old Freeport woman, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of wire fraud in the scheme, the Justice Department said.
Mathieu had worked for the state’s Department of Corrections in New York City since 2016, and she joined the U.S. Navy Reserve and New York Naval Militia in 2021, according to the feds.

Early-Morning Inferno Rips Through Seaford Home, Three People Displaced
A house fire ripped through a home on Long Island early Friday, April 10, leaving three people displaced, officials said.
The blaze erupted around 5:15 a.m. on Peconic Avenue in Seaford, Newsday reported. About 75 firefighters, led by the Wantagh Fire Department, responded to the incident and doused the flames within about two hours, authorities said.
No injuries were reported, and the displaced residents, who have not been publicly identified, were working with the Red Cross on temporary housing, according to News 12 Long Island.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A Long Island social worker tried to snatch a toddler from a stroller, but the child’s great-grandfather fought her off, police said.
Heater Magone, 40, was walking a dog in Long Beach on Tuesday, April 7 when she tried to grab the little girl straight out of the stroller after unbuckling the straps, the Long Beach Police Department said.
