Yet another tractor-trailer jackknifed on Route 287, jamming traffic again and spilling a large amount of fluid on the highway Thursday morning. No injuries were reported in the mishap, which closed the left and center lanes on the northbound highway in Oakland just after 9:30 a.m. New Jersey State Police responded, along with Oakland police, firefighters and hazardous cleanup units. Another Tractor-Trailer Crashes Off Route 287
A tractor-trailer rolled off Route 287 and down an embankment before dawn Friday. It was another in a series of crashes that has plagued that stretch of highway for years. The System Freight rig out of Jamesburg rolled off the northbound highway near Exit 59 to southbound Route 208 in Oakland at 4:25 a.m., New Jersey State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez said. The NJ Motor Vehicle Commission office in Wayne has temporarily closed after an employee tested positive for COVID-19, reports say. The center closed early on Monday and will reopen "when we have verified a safe and healthy environment for customers and employees," an MVC spokesperson told News12. Its website says it is closed until Tuesday, July 28. Locations in Oakland, Paterson, and Lodi are the nearby locations open for license transactions. Bergen Cub Scout Leader, Youth Sports Coach Charged With Sexually Assaulting Minor
A Bergen County Cub Scout leader from Oakland who also coaches youth sports was charged with sexually assaulting a minor. Gary Sarno, 47, remained held Monday in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing Wednesday in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack. Sarno "engaged in sexual conduct with a child" between 16 and 17 years old late last December, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. Mahwah Schools Superintendent Announces Retirement
Mahwah Schools Supt. C. Lauren Schoen officially announced her retirement on Monday. The district Board of Trustees will vote on a resolution accepting Schoen's resignation at its meeting this Wednesday, Schoen said. Her last official day in the district will be Aug. 1, the superintendent said. Schoen said in a letter to parents that her time in Mahwah "has been filled with a great many district-wide successes and outstanding student achievements." Oakland police tracked down and arrested a Paterson man who they said stole a large collection of landscaping equipment hours earlier. Several backpack leaf blowers, weed whackers, a pole trimmer and other miscellaneous equipment were taken after someone cut the hinge on the side door of a trailer parked in a lot off Bauer Drive sometime between 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon and 7:15 a.m. Monday. Several weekend motorcycle crashes in North Jersey – including at least one fatality – began Friday when a Newark motorcyclist was killed on Route 280. Charles L. A car carrier and a dump truck both toppled over on Route 287 in Oakland around noontime Friday, closing several lanes and causing major delays well into the afternoon.
