Indian Hills HS Lacrosse Star From Oakland, Long Island Teammate Killed In NC Crash
A former star lacrosse player for Indian Hills High School in Oakland was killed along with a teammate from Long Island in a car crash in North Carolina, authorities said. Ann Wray, a sophomore agribusiness major at the University of Mount Olive, was in a Jeep with six classmates that was t-boned by a dump truck on a two-lane highway in town shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, the North Carolina Highway Patrol reported. Several small dogs rescued from an illegal Scotch Plains puppy mill are in need of homes, Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge says. While dogs in a family of Pomperanians whose future adopters are waiting anxiously pending medical clearance, several Chihuahua puppies still need families, the Oakland-based rescue says. The gentle and shy puppies need a home prepared to give them care where they will feel safe and loved, RBARI said on Facebook. Notorious 'El Chapo Of Opioids' Doc From Bergen Admits Randomly Prescribing Pain Killers, More
A Bergen County doctor who became notorious as the “El Chapo of Opioids” admitted in federal court Monday that he randomly wrote prescriptions for oxycodone, Percocet and more with no questions asked and then tried to cover his tracks. Robert Delagente, 45, of Oakland, “knowingly prescribed for his patients some of the most dangerous and addictive drugs available, sometimes with no more contact than a text message from the patient,” U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said after Delagente pleaded guilty in federal court in Newark to illegally selling the drugs, falsifying records and conspiracy. …

Oakland Planning Board Approves Strip Mall At Former Burger King Site
The Oakland Planning Board recently approved a strip mall for the site of the shuttered Burger King on Ramapo Valley Road. The building on the 1.6-acre property will be demolished and construction on the new strip mall is expected to begin this summer, NorthJersey.com reports. The site has been vacant since Burger King relocated to 186 Ramapo Valley Road nearly 10 years ago. No tenants have been secured yet, the report says. Oakland Man, 19, Dies In Morris County Crash
A 19-year-old Oakland resident died in a Morris County crash, authorities said. The man was headed northbound on Green Pond Road near the Jefferson border in a Mercedes Benz when he crossed into the southbound lanes and hit a Mazda Friday morning, Rockaway Township Police Lt. Paul Reilly said. The Mazda driver, a 24-year-old woman from Sussex Borough, was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Reilly said. An Oakland physician who already pleaded guilty to state insurance fraud charges has been indicted on federal counts of prescribing opioids without a legitimate medical reason and doctoring records to cover it up. An Oakland doctor who boasted of being the “El Chapo of Opioids” will be sentenced to a plea-bargained five years in state prison after admitting that he submitted $32,000 in bogus health insurance claims. Under the terms of his deal with the state, Robert Delagente will be sentenced to the five years on Jan. 10 in exchange for pleading guilty to health care claims fraud during a hearing in Superior Court in Hackensack.
