What Shortage? Washington Township Firefighters Have Plenty Of Christmas Trees For Sale During a season when fewer Christmas trees than usual are available, you might find some comfort and joy in Washington Township, where the local firefighters have a wide assortment to choose from. A widespread shortage is partly a result of COVID and mostly a function of the economy: Farmers planted fewer trees a decade or so ago, when relatively low sales during a national recession reduced the available space. That means not only fewer trees this Christmas season but fewer stands selling them. Leave it to firefighters to come to the rescue. Washington Township’s smoke eaters boast a wid…

"Only a test that uses a nasal swab or saliva should be used to diagnose active cases of COVID-19," the FBI Newark Field Office said in an alert Friday. "If you were recently tested for COVID-19 at Infinity Diagnostic Laboratory, located at 6715 At…

An indoor kids basketball program operated by Englewood-based CMEK will continue uninterrupted "through the month of December and beyond," Director Chad Mekles wrote this past week to parents. Gov. Phil Murphy ordered the suspension, which covers all youth and adult sports, amid a rising resurgence in COVID-19 cases. It remains in place at least until Jan. 2, he said. The decision t…

If Lt Mark Richardson Calls You About Missing Jury Duty, Hang Up It’s the phone scam that won’t die: A caller who claims to be from the local sheriff’s office threatens to arrest you if you don’t pay fines for ducking jury duty. He says his name is Lt. Mark Richardson. Heading into what will be its fifth year, the scam is still fooling people throughout the U.S. Hoping the scare tactic works, the caller warns that you’re in big trouble because you failed to report for jury duty. Then he offers you a way out: Just buy Amazon or iTunes gift cards for such-and-such an amount, then give him the numbers on the back of the card. "Yeah, right," you say. …
