Darien Dog Groomer's Pet Project Is Creating The Right Look DARIEN, Conn. – Rebecca Stanton finds it surprising how far dog owners will travel to have their pet groomed at her Darien shop Paws & Reflect, with some making a 100-mile round trip or more to get the right look. “I think part of it is the knowledge of our groomers,’’ said Stanton, whose customers come from as far as New Haven, Long Island and the upper reaches of Fairfield County. “And it’s one of the prettiest grooming shops. New Canaan Beats Darien To Win State Football Title NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan High School rolled past Darien, 44-12, on Saturday to win the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class L football championship at Boyle Stadium in Stamford. Nick Cascione threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Rams (14-1), who set a school record for wins. Darien (12-2), which beat New Canaan in the team’s match-up on Thanksgiving, saw its nine-game winning streak snapped. The Rams dominated from the outset, building a 17-0 lead at halftime. Fairfield Prep Runner 20th At National Cross County Championships FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Prep senior Christian Alvarado finished 20th at the Foot Locker cross country national championships Saturday in San Diego. In his final high school cross country race, Alvarado finished in 15:47. The race featured the top 40 high school runners in the country, and the top 15 earned All-American status. Alvarado finished 11 seconds behind the 15th place finisher. While Darien’s Alex Ostberg, who finished 11th, ran with the leaders from the outset, Alvarado hung back and tried to make a late move. Darien Runner Finishes 11th At National Cross Country Race DARIEN, Conn. – Darien High School junior Alex Ostberg finished 11th Saturday at the Foot Locker cross country national championships in San Diego. Ostberg finished the 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) course in 15:31. Grant Fisher won the race in 15:07. The race featured the top 40 runners in the nation. Ostberg proved he belonged from the start. Westports Hannah DeBalsi Takes 2nd At National Cross Country Race WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport’s Hannah DeBalsi, a sophomore at Staples High School, finished second Saturday at the Foot Locker cross country championships in San Diego. DeBalsi covered the 5K course in 17:26, just 10 seconds behind winner Tessa Barrett of Abington Heights, Pa. The race featured the top 40 girls in the country. Barrett took the lead early on in the race. DeBalsi, who was fourth with about one mile to go, made a strong charge and tucked right behind the Pennsylvania runner with about 1,000 meters remaining. New Canaan Wins State Football Title; Fairfield Prep Game Delayed By Snow FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – New Canaan won the Class L state football championship, but Fairfield Prep will have to wait until Sunday, at least, to play for the Class LL title. The Rams defeated Darien, 44-12, at Boyle Stadium in Stamford. But Fairfield Prep’s game against Southington was postponed because of the snow. Wilton Running Club Girl Takes 2nd At National Cross Country Race WILTON, Conn. – Angela Saidman of the Wilton Running Club finished second Saturday in the 11-12 girls age group at the Junior Olympic cross country national championships in San Antonio, Texas. Saidman ran 10:42.68 for 3,000 meters, and trailed winner Devianna Salcedo by 14 seconds. There were 405 runners in the race. Saidman, who lives in Bethel, finished third in the regional race last month to qualify for nationals. She finished seventh in the national race last year. She is coached by Mary Zengo at the Wilton Running Club.

Fairfield Race Scheduled For Sunday Postponed To Dec. 22 FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Saturday’s expected snow has forced two Fairfield County races to move their events to different days. Gail’s Trail Run in Redding will now be run on Saturday, Dec. 14, while the Holiday Run For Toys in Fairfield will be pushed back to Sunday, Dec. 22. Darien Football Looks To Tackle New Canaan For State Championship DARIEN, Conn. – Darien High School’s football team won three state titles between 1991 and 1996. In four subsequent trips, however, the Blue Wave have come up short. On Saturday, against its archrival and in one of Fairfield County’s most historic environments, the Blue Wave get another chance.
