Opening Day for High School Teams Opening Day for High School Teams Opening Day for High School Teams
Opening Day for High School Teams Today is the opening day of the high school sports season. Teams have been running, hitting, throwing and catching over the past few weeks in anticipation of the new season. Spring is perhaps the busiest season on the sports calendar, with teams taking the field in baseball, softball, lacrosse, track and field and tennis. Brien McMahon’s baseball team, which was the Class LL runner-up in 2009, hosts Bunnell tonight at 7 p.m. in its season-opener. Norwalk’s baseball team travels to Greenwich for a 4 p.m. contest. The Senators and the Bears figure to be among the teams battling for playoff be…

Stoker Comes Long Way to Run Boston Stoker Comes Long Way to Run Boston Stoker Comes Long Way to Run Boston
Stoker Comes Long Way to Run Boston If there’s a race in the area this weekend, it’s a decent bet Kate Stoker will be standing at the starting line and crossing the finish line. Racing is Stoker’s hobby and passion. Last year, she ran 55 races and is on a similar pace this year. Stoker will run the Boston Marathon on April 19. It is her first Boston, and the path she took to get there is unconventional. Stoker, 42, didn’t begin running until 2004. Her brothers were runners, and Stoker attended a few of their races. “I said I wish I could do it,’’ Kate remembers. “It looked like a great accomplishment.” Initially she could o…

Taliercio Still Slings It in Touch Football League Taliercio Still Slings It in Touch Football League Taliercio Still Slings It in Touch Football League
Taliercio Still Slings It in Touch Football League Tom Taliercio is the Brett Favre of the Norwalk Men’s Touch Football League.  Unlike the on-again, off-again NFL gunslinger, however, the long-time quarterback doesn’t show signs of slowing down any time soon. Taliercio, 45, won his fifth league title with the Four Seasons Falcons in March. “But that’s in 100 years of playing,’’ he says. It isn’t 100, but Taliercio has been playing in the league since  1983. He joined a team started by his brothers Sal and Michael, and an uncle, Joe. He started as a wide receiver became the quarterback after Eddie Pekor, the team’s long-time signal-caller, …

Notre Dame Will Get a Kick Out of Lesch Notre Dame Will Get a Kick Out of Lesch Notre Dame Will Get a Kick Out of Lesch
Notre Dame Will Get a Kick Out of Lesch   Brendan Lesch’s decision to attend Notre Dame came quickly, but it has been years in the making. The Staples High School soccer star, a junior, decided in February that he will further his soccer career with the Irish. He made his choice 30 minutes after getting a verbal offer from coach Bobby Clark. Clark played a critical role in Lesch’s decision. Since arriving in 2001, Notre Dame has been one of the top teams in the Big East and is a perennial NCAA Tournament team. “Their goal is to win a national championship, and that’s my goal,’’ Lesch says. Lesch, a midfielder, helped Staples w…
