Hamden Ends Staples' Season Hamden Ends Staples' Season Hamden Ends Staples' Season
Hamden Ends Staples' Season The Staples High School baseball team lived to play on Wednesday – but only because Mother Nature extended its season by 24 hours. The number two seeded Wreckers, who set a school record with 18 wins in the regular season, dropped their Class LL state tournament opening round game to Hamden, 7-3. The 31st seeded Hamden Green Dragons jumped out to a 5-1 lead on Tuesday thanks to a monster home run by leftfielder Jordan Teague. Play was suspended when the skies opened after the top of the fourth. The delay seemed to refocus Staples briefly when freshman Bryan Terzian roped a clutch two-run …

Weston Rallies Late to Top Nonnewaug Weston's baseball team flirted with danger before rallying for five runs in the sixth inning to defeat Nonnewaug, 5-1, in the first round of the Class S tournament Wednesday. The 13th-seeded Trojans will play No. 4 Montville in the second round Thursday. Alec Joseph delivered the key blow for Weston (16-7), a two-out, two-run double that snapped a 1-1 tie. Weston tied the game earlier in the inning on a single by Jjay Lane. "I got a curveball and it was hanging,'' Joseph said. "I made sure to stay back. " Winning pitcher Mike McDonald delivered a two-run single later in the inning that Nonn…
Staples Lax Looks to Bounce Back Staples Lax Looks to Bounce Back Staples Lax Looks to Bounce Back
Staples Lax Looks to Bounce Back Staples lacrosse coach Paul McNulty has been coaching sports for over 40 years. One loss isn't going to make him search for the panic button. "We're going to be fine,'' McNulty said as the top-seeded Wreckers (16-1) prepared for Thursday's Class L opener against the winner of Tuesday's game between South Windsor and Newington. Game time is 3 p.m. at Staples. Staples comes into the tournament off its best season in school history. The Wreckers rolled through the regular season undefeated before falling to St. Joseph, 10-7, in the quarterfinals of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic …

New Career is Sew Challenging Samira Schmitz knew nothing about operating a sewing machine. Schmitz started producing her own children's clothing and home goods line, Zebedebe, about a year ago. Schmitz sews shirts, pillows, onesies, blankets and towels and sells them at craft shows and farmers' markets. She will be selling Friday at the Rowayton Farmer's Market Friday at Pinkney Park. Teacher Gives Triathlons a Try Teacher Gives Triathlons a Try Teacher Gives Triathlons a Try
Teacher Gives Triathlons a Try Susan Nakas didn't run the Weston 5K last weekend, but she brought as much energy to the races as anyone who competed in the event. Nakas, a second grade teacher at Hurlbutt Elementary in Weston, helped direct the kids' fun run and 1-mile race for children. She encouraged many of her students to participate, and she seemed to know every kid in sneakers at the race. "It's kind of giving back,'' says Susan, who has been a teacher for 11 years. "I feel like these are my kids. One of the guys running in the 5K I had in second grade. I feel this is my turf." Nakas knows more than a little about…
