Waters Dives Into Coaching Artie Waters changes seamlessly with the seasons. In the spring, he coaches lacrosse and baseball. In summer, it's swimming and diving. Then football, back to diving in the winter, with a little basketball mixed in. "It keeps you going,'' Waters says. That's an understatement. Waters has coached sports for 20 years in Darien, starting with the girls diving team at Darien High School. He worked as a salesperson at the time, but has since switched careers. He now teaches physical education at Villa Maria School in Stamford. It allows him more time to coach Darien youth. "I decided to go out an…

Freshman Nets State Tennis Title Kimmy Guerin ripped forehand winners, slammed home serves and stuck to an aggressive game plan. The result was a stunningly easy win for the Weston High freshman over two-time champion Vanessa Petrini of Westhill High School in Stamford, 6-3, 6-3, in the singles finals of the State Open at Yale University. Guerin, the No. 2 seed, simply overpowered the top-seeded senior. There were five straight service breaks in the first set before Guerin held in the ninth game. In the second set, Guerin broke Petrini to go up 2-1 and won the next two games to take a 4-1 lead. Petrini tried to battle back,…

Rams Drop Doubles Final New Canaan's Alyssa Baker and Kimberly Glerum had seen this movie before. They didn't like the ending the first time, or the second. The Rams' pair lost in the State Open doubles final to Weston's Marie Gargiulo and Emma Samson, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) Wednesday at Yale University. Weston also eliminated them in last year's final. "They're not like any other team that we go up against,'' said Baker, a senior, who made three trips to the State Open in doubles but never walked away with the top prize. "They have so much on their balls. But we gave them a good battle. I think we gave them a run for thei…

Weston Pair Come Up Aces Emma Samson felt pressure. She knew teammate Marie Gargiulo won the State Open doubles title last year with Lindsey Gersh. She didn't want to let Gargiulo down in her senior year. Samson, a junior, stepped to the service line at match point Wednesday at New Canaan, and sent a serve to the New Canaan side. Gargiulo took it from there, landing a clean volley to give the Weston pair a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory in the doubles final over New Canaan's Alyssa Baker and Kimberly Glerum. Both teams entered the match undefeated. "It was pretty nerve-wracking,'' Samson said. "I just thought about it not…

Dolphins Win Pair in NAA Softball The Life Solution Center of Darien Dolphins defeated the Briana Salon Cubs twice in three days to end the regular season. The first game was a pitchers' duel, 5-3. The 'Fins held a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning, when the Cubs tied it up. The Dolphins bounced right back as Rebecca Link singled and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Jenna Casolo. Now He Owns a Home, by George At age 67, George Keels Jr.'s first experience with home ownership is tinged with regret. The Norwalk High School custodian is thrilled to have his own home in Bridgeport. Unfortunately for Keels, he had to leave Norwalk. "Yes, because I've been here so long,'' Keels said when I asked him if he missed Norwalk, which until he moved he called home for his whole life. He would have liked to have stayed, but couldn't find a home he and his wife Barbara could afford. "They build these condos and they're so expensive,'' said Keels, who rented an apartment at St. Pauls Terrace on Martin Luther Kin…

Rotanz Sparks Prep Past Staples Many seniors on the Staples High School boys lacrosse team grew up playing with Fairfield Prep's Brendan Rotanz. Tuesday night, they couldn't stop him when it mattered most. Rotanz erupted for four goals in the fourth quarter to lift the Jesuits to an exciting 9-8 win over the Wreckers in the semifinals of the Class L boys lacrosse tournament. No. 4 Prep (18-5) will take on No. 2 Cheshire in the championship game Saturday at Brien McMahon. The Jesuits are seeking their fifth straight Class L title. Cheshire has defeated Prep twice already this season. "I'm sorry I stepped up late,'' said Ro…
