McDonagh Loses in U.S. Amateur Tommy McDonagh of Norwalk lost in the first round of match play Wednesday at the U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay in Washington. McDonagh, entering his senior year at Penn State, lost to Brad Benjamin of Rockford, Ill., 6-and-5. McDonagh lost the first hole with a double bogey, and it was an uphill climb from there. Benjamin went 2-up with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole and was 4-up after nine holes. McDonagh was the only golfer from Connecticut to make it into the match play portion of the tournament. Norwalk's Cameron Wilson and Wilton's John Murphy failed to qualify for match play.

Balin Leads at Met Open Danny Balin of Burning Tree in Greenwich took a one-shot lead into Wednesday's second round of the Met Open at Bethpage Black in Long Island. Balin shot a two-under-par 69 in Tuesday's opening round. "The momentum going into the Met Open has been huge for me," said Balin, who played in the PGA Championship earlier this month. "A win at the Westchester Open earlier this summer and to go out there and compete with those guys at Whistling really geared me up for today. The wind we faced out there [at Whistling Straits] helped me prepare for here." Woodway's Mike Ballo Jr. shot 76 and is tied f…

Friday Race Goes All Out for Autism Friday Race Goes All Out for Autism Friday Race Goes All Out for Autism
Friday Race Goes All Out for Autism Ron Rosenfeld noticed when he opened his footwear store more than three years ago that parents bought two or three pairs of sneakers for their children. A few days later, the mother or father would return to his New Balance store on Main Street with all but one pair. Each time, their child was not along. "They said their child had autism,'' says Rosenfeld, whose footwear store will hold the second annual All Out for Autism run Friday night. "They told me a lot retailers didn't want to deal with their children. I said we weren't like that, that they could come in after hours and we would help…

Youth Is Served by Tennis Program Bradley Smyth and Ashley Lampman played tennis in high school. And both say playing is easier than teaching children to hit forehands, serves and volleys. They worked this summer as instructors for Slammer Tennis World in its partnership with the New Canaan YMCA. "I love tennis, but it's hard teaching little kids,'' says Ashley, who played at Norwalk High School. It was her first summer teaching tennis. "I find it hard to get them to concentrate on what we teach them,'' added Bradley, who played at Stamford High School. "They want to go back to their old ways." Lampman, 18, and Smyth, 20, t…
Marinello's Outslugs O'Neill's Marinello's Outslugs O'Neill's Marinello's Outslugs O'Neill's
Marinello's Outslugs O'Neill's O'Neill's Pub raced out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning of Tuesday's game against undefeated Marinello's in an Adult Softball League game. It took one mighty swing by Phil Mrazik to erase it. Mrazik's first-inning grand slam sparked a six-run outburst and Marinello's bats kept slugging throughout en route to a 16-8 victory. Mrazik went 4-for-4 and scored two runs to lead Marinello's, which improved to 16-0 overall and is 5-0 in the second half. O'Neill's dropped to 13-3 and is 4-1 in the second half. The wind knocked balls down and gave outfielders fits all night, but the elements …
Paddler Pens a Kayaking Book Paddler Pens a Kayaking Book Paddler Pens a Kayaking Book
Paddler Pens a Kayaking Book David Park didn't intend to write a book when he went paddling off to the Norwalk Island. "I just tried to locate where the osprey nests were,'' says the 55-year-old East Norwalk resident. He ended up writing "Kayaking In and Around the Norwalk Islands," first published last year. The 36-page book describes 14 islands and sites in the area, provides safety tips and details the history of the Norwalk Islands. (Did you know Tavern Island was called "celebrity isle" in reference to the island's many guests?) Some of the islands also have campsites, and of course, the book lists of the osprey n…

Evans Helps Stormers Win Lindsey Evans of Fairfield was a key contributor who helped the Shippan Stormers 14-and-under tennis team win the New England Sectional Championships recently and qualify for a berth in the National Championships. The Stormers, who are based out of the Shippan Racquet Club in Stamford, won all three of their team matches and Evans was on a winning girls' doubles team in every match.
