The Norwalk facility hosted an open house for its Lil' Kickers and Lil' Laxers programs to expose kids as young as 18 months to the sports. "We just try to give a little taste of our program,'' says Mary Kieran-Mendez, who directs the Lil' Kickers program. The soccer program teaches children ages 18 months to 9 years developmental skills in a fun and safe setting. On Saturday, the kids dribbled, hustled through cones and kicked the ball with instructors Tom Dutchess, in video, and…

Kids 'Tri' Their Best More than 70 young multi-sport athletes swam, ran and rode bicycles Sunday at Staples High School to raise money for YMCA scholarships. The competitors gave it their all in the Westport Weston Family YMCA's Strong Kids Triathlon, even if they weren't too keen on all of the events. "I liked everything except the biking," said Kevin Xiang, a 14-year-old Staples freshman who won his age division. "I've never been bike racing before and my bike is kind of small." Madison Keith, a 12-year-old from Fairfield, came out of the pool first and also did well on the bicycle. She was expecting to run a …

Ballo Seeks to Make It a Go as a Pro Some people know their professional calling when they're in college. Some figure it out much later. Mike Ballo knew much earlier. "I always said I wanted to be a professional golfer since I was 5 years old,'' Ballo says. "I actually got good enough to try to do it." He has a few amateur hurdles to clear in the next two months. The 22-year-old graduate of St. John's then plans to head to Florida to compete in the 12-event Hooters Winter Series. It will be the start of a professional career that he hopes will land him on the PGA Tour. "I'm going to give it a go,'' Ballo says. "As long as I ca…

Wildcats 7th-Graders Fall Short The Norwalk Wildcats seventh-grade team rallied from a 20-0 deficit to make things interesting in its game against Ridgefield. But the Wildcats eventually fell, 27-12, in a Fairfield County Football game Saturday at Norwalk High School, despite two touchdowns from Spencer Jacobsen. "They didn't quit, that's the main thing,'' Norwalk coach Chris Santopietro said of the Wildcats rally in the second half to get within a touchdown and conversion. Ridgefield struck in the first quarter with a 22-yard run by shifty quarterback Alex Buckanavage. His 9-yard touchdown pass to Dante Cobelli with 10:5…

Westport Bantam 4s Fall to Fairfield The Westport Bantam 4 North football team moved deep into Fairfield territory in the final minutes of Sunday's Fairfield County Football League game at Westport's P.J. Romano Field. Westport tried several passes to get a chance at a game-tying conversion. Fairfield hung on, however, for 12-6 victory. "I was hoping we could get one of them to work,'' coach Craig Bergamo said. "We took a couple of shots. It almost worked." Westport fell behind in the first quarter on a 26-yard run by Fairfield's David Summers. Westport tied it in the second quarter on a 50-yard run by Timmy Luciano, who broke…

Wildcat 4th-Graders Hold Off Westport The Fairfield Wildcats Bantam 4 Red team doesn't pass frequently. But it connected on a pivotal one Sunday to defeat the Westport Bantam North 4th-graders, 14-6, in a Fairfield County Football League game at P.J. Romano field. Quarterback David Summers hooked up with Tripp Ryan on a 73-yard pass play with 24 seconds left in the third quarter to snap a 6-6 tie. Summers scored on a conversion for the game's final points. Westport moved inside the Fairfield 20 in the final moments of the game and tried several passes. The game wasn't secure until Sean Fuller intercepted a pass for Fairfield. …
