Staples Grad Earns All-Ivy Honors Former Staples standout Andrew Kennedy, a tight end for Columbia University, was named first team All-Ivy League last week. Kennedy, a senior, caught 50 passes for 616 yards and nine touchdowns. For his career, Kennedy had 102 receptions, 1,187 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. He is the first Columbia tight end since Wade Fletcher in 2004 to be named first team All-Ivy. Kennedy was a second-team All-Ivy choice in 2009. Teammate Nico Gutierrez, who played at New Canaan High School, earned an honorable selection. He caught 30 passes, including two for touchdowns.

Darien Shows How to Handle a Crisis The reported vandalism by five players of Darien High School's football team at archrival New Canaan High's campus last week threw a wet blanket over what should have been a crackling Thanksgiving Day fire at the teams' annual Turkey Bowl. Instead of talking about a highly anticipated showdown between two teams that began playing in 1928, fans were forced to confront the ugly side of intolerant adolescent behavior. There were, however, several positive developments to an ugly episode. The actions of several groups and individuals deserve praise for their swift response to a challenging assig…
Bottger Matches Siblings' Standards Bottger Matches Siblings' Standards Bottger Matches Siblings' Standards
Bottger Matches Siblings' Standards Karen Bottger represented her family well during her four-year career with the Weston High School swim team. Given the success her brother and sister had during their careers at Weston, that was no small accomplishment. Karen, a senior, concluded her swim career by leading the Trojans to the Class S title, its first crown since 2006. Bottger played a big part: She took second in the 200 freestyle, third in the 500 free, anchored the first place 200-free relay and swam leadoff for the second place 400-free relay. That's four events, four top three finishes and a team state championship. "For …

Deep Lineup Lifts Swimmers to Title The Weston High girls swim team knew East Catholic was its primary competition for the Class S team crown. The Eagles had won the last three state titles, while Weston finished second in 2009, third in 2008 and fourth in 2007. This year was the final chance for Weston's seniors to walk away with state hardware. The Trojans earned their state title, but it wasn't by much. Weston finished with 568.5 points to East Catholic's 561.5. For the tight-knit senior group of Karen Bottger, Lauren Garner, Ali Bertan, Paige Goldstein and Georgia Flynn, victory tasted oh-so-sweet. "It was awesome,'' Bott…

Darien Falls to New Canaan A difficult 48 hours for Darien High School's football team and coach Rob Trifone proved equally as challenging on the field in Thursday's Turkey Bowl against archrival New Canaan. Led by three touchdown passes by Matt Milano and two touchdowns by Kevin Macari, the Rams handed the Blue Wave their first loss, 42-14, before a standing-room only crowd at Darien High School. Five Darien players were suspended from the team after the vandalism at New Canaan High School on Tuesday night. On Thursday, Darien High athletic director John Keleher read a letter before the game from the team's football …

New Canaan Rolls Over Darien, 42-14 Faced with the prospect of win or go home, Kevin Macari did everything he could to help New Canaan's football team extend its season. As a side benefit, Macari's big afternoon helped the Rams beat archrival Darien, 42-14, in Thursday's Turkey Bowl at Darien High School. Macari returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown, caught a 79-yard touchdown pass and threw for another score as the Rams qualified for the Class L playoffs. New Canaan (9-1) earned the sixth seed and will travel to Naugatuck for Tuesday's first-round game. "If we don't win this game, we're putting our pads away tomorrow,'' M…

Stamford Rips Westhill in Finale Moments after closing the book on the 2010 season, Stamford quarterback Bryan Boderick and the Black Knights were looking forward to 2011. Westhill's team was looking ahead for a different reason. Broderick, a junior, was splendid in accumulating 287 yards of total offense, running for two touchdowns, passing for two and leading the Black Knights to a 53-6 rout of the Vikings Wednesday night at Boyle Stadium. Stamford finished the season 6-4. Westhill finished 1-9. "We wish we still had some games left,'' said Boderick, who rushed 10 times for 140 yards and completed 7 of 10 passes for 14…

Staples Shoots for Playoff Berth With its shot at a league championship denied, Staples' football team will look to reach the Class LL playoffs when it meets Greenwich on Thursday in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. Kickoff is at 10 a.m. at Cardinal Stadium. Greenwich (5-4) is eliminated from the state playoffs. The Cardinals would like nothing more than to oust the Wreckers (8-1), who are seeded seventh in the Class LL rankings. Staples (8-1) lost to Trumbull, 15-13, in its last game. The defeat cost the Wreckers a chance to play for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title. A victory over Greenwich…
