Weston 6th Graders Throw Scare Into Westport For three quarters Sunday, Weston's sixth-grade girls basketball team appeared poised to pull off a stunning upset against undefeated Westport. But an offensive dry spell in the final period proved to be Weston's undoing. Westport outscored Weston 13-2 in the final quarter Sunday at Greens Farms Academy to post a 23-15 victory in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Weston led 5-4 after one quarter, 11-6 at halftime and 13-10 after three quarters before Westport rallied. Westport scored two quick baskets in the first minute of the fourth quarter to take a 14-13 lead and never looked back…

Darien 5th-Graders Roll Over Westport The Darien YMCA fifth-grade boys basketball team has won 11 games in 12 tries this season. In Sunday's 44-25 rout over Westport at Greens Farms Academy, the young players showed what makes them such a quality team. Will Enzor scored 14 points to pace a balanced attack and Darien outscored Westport 31-12 over the middle two periods to roll to victory in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Darien is 6-1 in league play and 11-1 overall. Its only loss was 39-32 decision to undefeated Mount Vernon of New York. "We've got some height and we have some very good athletes,'' Darien coach Joe M…

Westport 5th Graders Fall to Darien Westport PAL fifth-graders battled Darien to a standstill through one period of Sunday's boys basketball game.  Then things changed abruptly, and Darien went on to post a 44-27 victory in a Fairfield County Basketball League game. Darien outscored Westport 19-8 in the second quarter. At the end of three quarters, once-beaten Darien built a 38-19 lead. Westport struggled to find an answer to an aggressive press by Darien, which resulted in Westport turnovers and easy transition baskets for Darien. "It's not a secret that we struggle with the press,'' Westport coach Olivia Dardy said. "But …

Cold-Shooting New Canaan Falls to Norwalk Cold-Shooting New Canaan Falls to Norwalk Cold-Shooting New Canaan Falls to Norwalk
Cold-Shooting New Canaan Falls to Norwalk New Canaan girls basketball coach Kim Palmer heard her team's shooting statistics and was aghast. "You're not going to win too many games,'' she said, "when you shoot seven-for-49." The Rams never found their offensive rhythm in Monday's 37-21 loss to Norwalk in a Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game between probable playoff teams. The Bears (6-3 overall, 4-3 league) held the Rams to five points in the second half in erasing a 16-13 halftime deficit. "They played with a lot of energy,'' Palmer said of the Rams. "They didn't get themselves set and ready to shoot. Eighty …
Norwalk Shuts Down New Canaan Norwalk Shuts Down New Canaan Norwalk Shuts Down New Canaan
Norwalk Shuts Down New Canaan The Norwalk High School girls basketball coach knew that to defeat New Canaan in Monday's critical Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game, the Bears would have to contain the Rams' brilliant guard, Sarah Mannelly. They did — and they also shut down every other player the Rams put out on the floor. The Bears won, 37-21, holding New Canaan to just five second half points. Mannelly was held to four, 10 below her season average, as the Bears defended Mannelly with an aggressive box-and-one. Zayna Fulton and Alyssa Morris harassed Mannelly the whole game. Norwalk forced New Can…
