Darien Schools Add World Language Program, Rugby DARIEN, Conn. – Darien schools have supported adding foreign language to the elementary schools, as well as a social worker to help at-risk students. They also supported adding varsity rugby to Darien High School, after the Board of Education approved its budget for 2012-13 on Tuesday night. The district’s operating budget for next year increased $4,010,377 over last year, or 5.62 percent, for an overall budget of $80,320,182. The foreign language instruction at the elementary schools will cost $344,000, which includes the cost of adding a new teacher at each of the five schools. Board memb…

Letter: Bayne Reluctantly Supports Darien Budget DARIEN, Conn. – I am reluctantly supporting this year's selectmen's budget. Our budget is growing from $38.8 million in this current fiscal year to $41.3 million in the next fiscal year. That is an increase in Darien’s non-education spending of approximately $2.5 million and represents approximately a 6.5 percent increase over last year’s town budget.  About $1.3 million, or a bit more than 3.3 percent of the increase, is due to debt service, about which there is little we can do. The remaining $1.25 million represents capital spending and increased operating expenses to deliver town service…

Stevenson: Budget Is An Investment In Darien DARIEN, Conn. – The following prepared statement was made by First Selectman Jayme Stevenson to the Darien Board of Selectmen Monday night. I would like to take a few minutes to dissect the budget so that the public has a better understanding of the philosophy we employed in our deliberations and to highlight the primary drivers of the increase. First, I would like to thank all our department heads, Karl Kilduff and Kate Buch for their diligence in the budget preparation process.   The themes of this year’s budget were two-fold and decided upon by this board: 1. To preserve current servic…

Approved Darien Budget Boosts Services for Youth DARIEN, Conn. — The Darien Board of Selectmen approved its budget Monday, with several items included to increase the town’s service to its youth. The budget increased 6.4 percent to $41,298,468. The budget includes a $15,000 increase in police overtime to pay for a school resource officer. This officer would be stationed in the halls of Darien High School during the day to build relationships with students and advise them on issues such as drinking or bullying. This would be the first year a SRO is used at the high school. The selectmen said they are introducing the officer on a trial basi…

Darien Hosts Free Valentine's Day Wedding Ceremony DARIEN, Conn. – Lots of people get married on Valentine’s Day, but only in Darien will all the ceremonies be held in the same place at the same time. On Tuesday evening, the third annual Valentine’s Day Free Wedding and Vow Renewal will take place at the Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s. Mary Pugh, a Connecticut Justice of the Peace, will perform the ceremonies. “It’s a nice way of giving back and spreading the concept of love on Valentine’s Day,” Pugh said. About 15 couples joined together last year for the event, she said. Pugh performed a group vow renewal, with couples all holding hands. She …

Masked Man Arrested on Darien Street DARIEN, Conn. – Darien police arrested a Fairfield man Thursday morning and charged him with breaking into a car to steal a GPS. Police said they spotted Christopher Guthman, 19, walking down the middle of Noroton Avenue around 3 a.m.. wearing dark clothes and a ski mask. When the officers approached him and asked him why he was walking in the middle of the street, he told them he was lost and needed a ride to Norwalk. According to the police report, the cord to a GPS was sticking out of his pocket. When it appeared to the officers that Guthman was getting ready to run away, they placed him…

Shays Focuses on Economic Issues in Senate Run FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – When Chris Shays announced he was running to replace Joe Lieberman for Senate, he focused his speech entirely on economic issues and how to create jobs and lower taxes. Absent from his announcement has been talk about social issues. “When you want to distract people from making difficult decisions, you poll opinion on social issues,” he said. Shays pointed to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay who, when faced with several legal and ethical problems in the House of Representatives in 2005, began speaking out against taking Terri Schiavo, a woman who was in a per…

Shays Wants Six Years To Fix America's Spending FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Chris Shays doesn't think it’s right for him to run for Senate if he can’t get the nation's budget balanced in a six-year term. Reducing government spending and boosting the economy are the main forces driving his campaign, the former U.S. representative for Fairfield County says.  “I’m not looking to make friends or become the next leader of the Senate," Shays said in an interview at his campaign headquarters in Stratford. "I want people to know that I’m writing a six-year contract to get the country back on track." Shays, who grew up in Darien, is seeking the Rep…

No Room in Darien Budget for Hoyt Street Sidewalks DARIEN, Conn. – Darien will probably not set aside $250,000 in its budget to build sidewalks on Hoyt Street as residents requested last month. However, the Board of Selectmen is still working to make sure that measures are taken to make the street safer for pedestrians. “I’m still pursuing the conversation,” said First Selectman Jayme Stevenson. She continues to meet with representatives from the state Department of Transportation and the South Western Regional Planning Agency about what can be done along the road. Because the street is a state route, Darien needs approval from the state be…

Social Worker, Spanish Look More Likely for Darien DARIEN, Conn. – Darien may be getting closer to offering foreign language instruction and having a social worker in its elementary schools. The question of whether rugby will become a varsity sport or remain a club is still up in the air. The Darien Board of Education met Thursday to discuss possible cuts to the budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year. Members addressed the major aspects of the budget, though no final decision has been made on anything yet. Several members are convinced that now is the time to add a long-awaited foreign language program to the elementary schools. Board member He…
