New Rochelle Holocaust Survivor To Spend Remembrance Day Telling Her Story NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- New Rochelle resident Bettina Graf will be spending Holocaust Remembrance Day on Thursday talking to students at Solomon Schechter School in White Plains. As part of the White Plains-based Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center's Speaker's Bureau, she said talking to students is of utmost importance.  "We are the last generation they will ever see," she said. "After that, it is strictly from the textbook." And so she talks, telling about her life and how, at age 11, everything drastically changed. She was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1927 to a wealthy f…

New Rochelle Holocaust Survivor Reminds People 'Not To Forget' NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. --  Moshe Avital's life could fill volumes...and it does. The Holocaust survivor, who divides his time between New Rochelle and Israel, has written 15 books, most about Jewry, Zionism, Jewish education, the Holocaust and the Bible. And, at age 86, he's still going. But the number that gets him the most is 11. He was the youngest of 11 growing up in Bilke, a village on the Eastern part of the former Czechoslovakia, and one of his immediate family's only survivors (two other siblings survived). And now, thanks to his three daughters, he now has 11 grandchildren, who he …

Certainly the "Mad Men" series has had an impact but "Sex and the City" probably was the kick-start. Seeing attractive women sipping colorful cocktails in beautiful settings must have inspired a new generation of cocktail enthusiasts. However, it’s not necessary to head to the hottest club or restaurant to partake in this “Cocktail Culture."  Enjoying a well-made libation in the comfort of your own home with someone you truly care about rather t…

Peekskill Artist, ArtsWestchester Winner, Gets Crafty PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — Marcy B. Freedman has been an artist a long time, with works included in more than 300 exhibitions across the country. Weston Holocaust Survivor To Speak In Greenwich For Remembrance Day WESTON, Conn. -- For a long time, Agnes Vertes, who lived as a hidden child in Budapest from 1944 to 1945, did not consider herself a survivor. She hadn't been in a Concentration Camp and had a hard time shaking the guilt of wondering why she survived when so many children – a million and a half -- were murdered. "One of them could have been an Einstein or something," Vertes said. "Or someone else really significant, and I am a nobody."  That thought sparked a seed many years ago that made Vertes realize she survived to be the voice of those who cannot speak. She is now a member of t…
