Two people were killed in separate Long Island crashes on Saturday, Aug. 5.
The first happened at around 2:45 p.m. in North Lindenhurst.
A 56-year-old West Babylon man was driving a 2008 Ford E250 van northbound on Straight Path, at the intersection of Wellwood Avenue, when his vehicle struck an electric scooter, Suffolk County Police said.
Shawn Gavigan, age 67, of Lindenhurst, who was riding the scooter, crossing Wellwood Avenue eastbound from Heathcote Road, police said.

A 21-year-old Long Island man is facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly killing a dog in his home.
Peter Minichello, of West Islip, was arrested Wednesday, July 12, more than a year after the alleged incident occurred.
According to Suffolk County Police, he was at his home on Edgewood Road on July 6, 2022, when he pushed the 5-year-old chihuahua mix down a flight of stairs.
The dog, which belonged to a family member, died from its injuries.

A Long Island woman has been arrested for falsely reporting that there were gunmen inside her home, authorities said.
On Friday, June 16 at approximately 2:20 p.m., Suffolk County Police received a 911 call from West Islip resident Melissa O’Brien, aged 32, with reports that two men with guns were inside her Gladstone Avenue home.
