State's First Electric School Buses Unveiled In Westchester
The first all-electric school buses have rolled out on the streets of Westchester. The White Plains School District is testing out five buses that will be operated through National Express, marking the state's first foray into an electric fleet of buses. The 100-percent electric buses will get an estimated 66 miles on a full battery charge, and drivers will be able to track battery life through their cell phones. There is also a dial inside and outside the vehicle. While regular school bus engine can be heard from a block away, the electric buses are nearly silent and emit a four-ton…

Pivotal Murphy, Harckham State Senate Battle Gets Heated
The 40th Senate District, which includes parts of Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties is considered one of eight "battleground" elections that could tip the balance of political power in Albany. On Tuesday, Nov. 6 voters can choose between incumbent Republican Sen. Terrence Murphy and Democrat Peter Harckham. Murphy of Yorktown was elected to the state Senate in 2014, and is completing his second two-year term. Harckham of South Salem, a former Westchester County legislator, defeated Robert Kesten in the Sept. 13 Democratic Party primary election. Kesten said he supports Harckh…

Bergen County Brothers Are Saving Americans Millions On Electric Bills
The summers were hurting Elmwood Park's Rose Scolaro the most. Her pool was running eight hours a day. Her air conditioning was on continuously. Her utility bill exceeded $600 -- with 90 percent of it going only toward electric. But Scolaro hasn't stressed over her utility bill since early 2017, when she switched to Phoenix Sun Energy, a solar panel installation company run by a pair of Bergen County brothers. These days, she pays approximately $200 monthly, saving her nearly $5,000 annually. Scolaro is only one example of someone Rochelle Park natives Chris Gordnick, 31, and Justin Gordn…

Cuomo Calls For Offshore Drilling Ban In New York
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a ban against offshore drilling and exploration on Friday, May 4, something that President Trump has pushed for. Cuomo advanced the "Save Our Waters" bill to prohibit the leasing of lands, including underwater lands, for offshore drilling and exploration in New York state waters. A draft of the legislation can be found by clicking here. The Governor's action to protect New York's waters from oil and gas exploration was prompted by the Trump administration's plan to vastly expand offshore drilling in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. "The federal…

Customers Could See Increased Utility Rates
Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G) filed its first regulatory rate review in more than eight years last week, asking for a small adjustment in electric and gas base delivery rates. If approved as filed, the typical combined residential electric and natural gas customer will see an approximate 1 percent increase or about $19.70 in their annual bill. Even with this proposed increase, bills for the typical residential customer are expected to be more than 15 percent lower than they were in 2010. "Our customer bills are already among the lowest in the state – and that won't …
