Police ID Drowned Fairfax County Swimmer
Police investigators in Virginia have identified the 29-year-old man who was pronounced dead after getting swept under the current while swimming in Fairfax County and drowning. Sterling resident German Salinas, 29, had to be pulled from the water on Sunday, June 19 in the Difficult Run Stream in McLean near the 8800 block of Georgetown Pike, the Fairfax County Police Department announced. Salinas' body was found a quarter-mile off the roadway on a nearby trail, officials said, he was transported to an area hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have identified the man who drowned after jumping into the Potomac River near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on Memorial Day as Jimmy Orlando Espinoza-Oviedo, NBC Washington reports. The 37-year-old from Oxon Hill jumped from an anchored vessel south of the bridge around 6 p.m., Fox5 said citing Maryland Natural Resources Police. A 37-year-old man drowned after jumping into the Potomac River near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on Memorial Day, Fox5 reports. Illegal Potomac River Swimmers Rescued After Near Drowning: Authorities
Two swimmers clung to rocks in the Potomac River before being rescued by officials earlier this week, authorities say. The swimmers, who were a part of a group of young people, entered the water near Lambert beach, when a strong current swept them away and prevented them from swimming back to shore, says Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. Swimming in the Potomac River is illegal and dangerous due to the strong currents and debris that lies beneath the surface of the deceptive water. Swimmers may be fined up to $200. Swift Water boats were able to retrieve both swimmers.

Construction Barges Carrying Excavator Break Loose, Float Down Potomac River

Hiker Pulled From Potomac River After Falling From Trail
A hiker was rescued from the Potomac River in Montgomery County after falling from a trail on Saturday, March 26. Several rescue boats were deployed to the area of the river near Billy Goat Trail A around 4:30 p.m., Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said. Temps hovered around 40 degrees as rescuers pulled the hiker to shore. Injuries were unknown as of 7:40 p.m. The trail is 4.7 miles long and follows a path between the C&O Canal and Potomac River within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. It is located near MoCo's Great Falls.
